Growing Up in New Ipswich - Cooling Off

After we met to discuss Growing Up in New Ipswich , Earl Somero offered to share a location he used to cool off when he was young. Kangas Falls is located on Furnace Brook Trail, part of the New Ipswich Conservation Commission's trail system. It looks inviting doesn't it?

If we lived in the 1920s we might have chosen the dam in Smithville. Pete Aho told me that after a day of haying the truck would stop at the dam and they would dive into the water at the bridge. This is not recommended  now since it is not deep enough. The dam filled with silt after the flood control dam was built in the 1960s.

Bank Village is probably the most popular spot to cool off. I used to take my son to the beach in the late 1970s. The owners gave permission to use it but it was rescinded when trash and broken glass appeared. What a loss.
