Apothecary Shop

Image
The historic home of Dr. John Preston is located close to the intersection of Turnpike Road and Main Street across the street from Re/Max Town Square. Interestingly enough, Dr. Preston had an apothecary right next to his home. It would be interesting to know what type of drugs he prepared.

Whirlpool Trail

Image
I've wanted to walk the older roads in New Ipswich for some time and had the opportunity on a warm day in April. Whirlpool Road runs from behind the Congregational Church to River Road. It was warm enough to wear shorts which might have been a bad idea since a number of brambles were growing in the middle of the trail which were impossible to avoid. There is nothing significant along this trail I was hoping to see a vernal pool or a nice hemlock grove but it is rather ordinary. Several scenes along the trail Some interesting fungi One end of the trail spills onto River Road  River Road in background

Fred Fowler

Image
I received some very sad news yesterday when I learned that our friend Fred Fowler suffered a series of strokes. I received this message from Ellen & Dave who organize the monthly music jams in Temple, NH. Hi friends, Here's what we've found out about Fred Fowler from his friends Ted & Maureen Petro of Temple, and Ed & Terri Dufresne of Eastham MA: Our treasured and talented friend, Fred Fowler, suffered a stroke at home on or about Friday, 4/20/18 and was taken by ambulance to eventually end up at Mass General after first being taken to two different small area hospitals.  Time is so critical in stroke care. Once there, he had a second, more severe stroke.  He's not expected to return to his home in Temple, but, when he's able to be moved, we understand from Ed that Fred will live near his son, Ed, in West Virginia.  Fred's "gonna find [himself] a bluebird" - one of his signature songs!  Thinking of "Angel Band", he may

Abandoned Mills of New Ipswich

Image
Whenever I drive through Bank Village along the Souhegan River I find myself wondering what it must have looked liked when the mills were standing. These were massive structures and I wonder if anything remains to mark their existence, besides the penstock in the woods and two dams on private property. It would nice to have a signage to mark their passing. Photos from the New Ipswich Historical Society collection.

All Electric

Image
I almost titled this "Look What I Saw at the Transfer Station". On on our Saturday dump run which happens to be the eve of Earth Day, we saw an all-electric Nissan Leaf hauling an all-electric dryer. I guess the lesson of this is that we can be green but we still generate trash. The good news is that the metal parts of the dryer were recycled in the metal dumpster. I'm impressed with the hauling capacity of this vehicle. Apparently it has a range of 107 miles with the 30 kWH battery. I don't know the range of the dryer. The all-electric Nissan Leaf hauling an all-electric dryer to the the New Ipswich Transfer Station I still refer to the Transfer Station as the dump because I remember the days when the dump was located on Page Hill Road. People would come with guns to shoot rats. I would pick up scraps of sailcloth material from Warwick Mills which I attempted to use to suppress weeds. It was different era and I pity the people's wells at the bottom of

New Ipswich Farmer's Market - New Home

Image
It was recently reported that the New Ipswich Farmer's Market would become an official program of the Recreation Department and be moved to the parking area of the Town Office. There was some discussion on Facebook about the size of the lot, but plenty of room exists between the buildings for both parking and vendors.  I was reminded of a Chicken Swap that was held in this location in late May of 2010 and I found some photos.  It was billed as a chicken swap but goats seemed to rule the day (at least for me). These are not chickens Zeke Somero was sellng Chicken Coops at the event Chickens Not chickens Not chickens I love baby goats
