Smallpox Cemetery
Smallpox came to Jaffrey, New Hampshire in 1792. The victims were placed in quarantine. Dr. Adonijah Howe of Jaffrey had studied the disease and petitioned the town to create a pest-house for a defense against smallpox. There was intense opposition, but the doctor prevailed. The idea was to inoculate against the disease using pus from lesions of victims. It must have been partially successful because only six victims are buried at this common grave. The Cemetery is located at the end of Fitch Road in Jaffrey, NH.
