Behind the Wall
For over a hundred years The Newell-Hurd House on Main Street has been hidden from view by a high stone wall. The wall was constructed after WWI by James C. Barr who eventually owned all the properties from the former 1808 House down Main Street and up Old Country Road through King Road, except for the Library and corner store.
In the first photo the tops of rose bushes can be seen behind the wall which gives a hint of the landscaping that existed on all of the Barr properties. The additional photos come from a photo album donated by the James C. Barr Estate to the New Ipswich, Historical Society.
